Hello,

I'm about to re new my car insurance & am in a dilemma whether I need to advise the DVLA & my insurance company of having RA? Even though it doesn't effect my driving, just thought I'd ask for advice BigGrin

I suggest you ask your GP if RA is a DVLA reportable condition. They should know? It was my GP that told me I had to not drive for 4 weeks following a suspected TIA.

Hi Louise

I have often thought about informing the DVLA too but am in the same position as you and haven't bothered. If you find out any more information please let us know.

The DVLA website lists anything notifiable. I recently had a brain haemorrhage (which is notifiable) the form I had to complete had a question about any drugs I am taking, so needed to explain I was taking the drugs listed for RA. I was a bit worried I should've told them previously because of this. I know the only person they contacted was my neurologist & no mention was made of my RA in any of the correspondence. I have also never told my car insurance company.

Hello Louise
My wife asked RA Nurse who said that it wasn't necessary. Just to be sure though she 'phoned DVLA who confirmed this but said that if special controls have been fitted to the car due to the illness, then they would need to be notified in writing. We have sent a letter to our insurance company to inform them of all this - just to cover our backs! Received a nice reply (from Saga) - no increase at all in our insurance premiums.

No increase in premiums - excellent. Insurance companies normally look for any excuse to load your premium. I had a bizarre conversation with one insurer a few years ago when I fitted winter tyres. They suggested that since they were not 'original equipment' there should be a loading. Eventually I spoke to a supervisor who saw sense and realised that winter tyres in winter REDUCE the risk of a accident!

I notified DVLA of my diagnosis. Had to complete a form about ability to control the car and fatigue. They came back saying all was fine. I know that having declared it, I can happily respond to any questions from Insurance Agencies.

Louise.

Hi Louise. I'm a newly diagnosed R A sufferer and asked my doctor about DVLA and insurance company and he said it was not necessary but to be on the safe side I phoned my Insurance Co. and they also said it was not necessary. I then had a form from DVLA to renew my driving licence and questions relating to illnesses did not include R A. I hope this helps you.
